Moishe Alexander is the president and founder of Canadian Funding Corporation, a highly successful mortgage lending and financing company. CFC’s success is certainly rooted in Mr. Alexander’s keen sense for business. More importantly, Canadian Funding Corporation has become an industry leader because of Moishe Alexander’s dedication to supporting his community through a combination of philanthropic projects and financial education. A native of Ontario, Canada, Mr. Alexander has committed himself both personally and professionally to serving his local community, values that other leaders in the world of finance often tend to overlook. His commitment to fostering success with his community is demonstrated by his donations to a variety of organizations. Moishe Alexander supports the JADA Foundation, a scientific research and development group focusing on green energy and development solutions. He also contributes to the United Chesed Charity, a nonprofit charity providing emergency rapid support to families and individuals requiring food, clothing, shelter, medical, financial, and social aid. Mr. Alexander is a longtime supporter of the Canadian Cancer Society, also contributing to seminaries in Israel as well as youth programs and schools in Ontario and beyond. Giving back to the community that has made his success possible is a priority for Mr. Alexander for deeply personal reasons.

“I grew up in what was probably a typical Jewish family – both parents raised in the U.S. and thoroughly Americanized. A secular conservative household. I received a fairly typical religious education for that time and culture – the minimum necessary. In retrospect, I probably learned more about Judaism after I left home than I did before.”

Moishe Alexander’s religious education might not have been strict. It did, however, instill some of the most basic and important values of the Jewish faith, values that inform his personal and business commitments to this day. “Tzedakah" is the Hebrew word for the acts that are referred to as "charity" in English - giving aid, assistance and money to the poor and needy or to other worthy causes. However, the nature of tzedakah is actually quite different from the idea of charity. The word "charity" suggests benevolence and generosity, a magnanimous act by the wealthy and powerful for the benefit of the poor and needy. The word "tzedakah" is derived from the Hebrew root Tzadei-Dalet-Qof, meaning righteousness, justice or fairness. In Judaism, giving to the poor is not viewed as a generous, magnanimous act; it is simply an act of justice and righteousness, a societal duty. Any member of a community is expected to perform tzedakah not by choice, but as a responsibility. The value of giving tzedakah is not measured simply by the act itself. Rather, there are eight different levels of tzedakah; certain forms of “giving” are considered to be more meretricious than others. The Talmud, a central text in the Jewish religion that lays out the tenants of law, ethics and philosophy, describes these different levels of tzedakah, organizing them into a list. The levels of charity, from the least commendable to the most meretricious are as follows:

1. Giving begrudgingly

2. Giving less than you ought to, but giving it cheerfully

3. Giving after being asked

4. Giving before being asked

5. Giving when you do not know the recipient's identity, but the recipient knows your identity

6. Giving when you know the recipient's identity, but the recipient doesn't know your identity

7. Giving when neither party knows the other's identity

8. Enabling the recipient to become self-reliant

Moishe Alexander practices tzedakah in its highest form whenever possible. Because the greatest gift one can offer another is the ability to become self-reliant, Mr. Alexander has chosen to use his business as a means of education as well as financial support. The Canadian Funding Group was created in 2004 with the goal of productively influencing the financial landscape through the funding of real estate loans to individuals and businesses. CFC has differentiated itself in the industry by providing funding for loans many other lenders are unwilling to support. Since 2004, Moishe Alexander, (along with his associates Jan Luistermans and Bryce Coates, and with the financial consultation of Marty Lapedus) have developed and shaped Canadian Funding Corporation into a business that supports projects of all sizes. Most importantly, CFC dedicates a great deal of energy into securing and supporting loans that will pay back dividends to their clients over the long-term. An individual or business owner who is well educated regarding the complexities of financing and real estate market growth is far more likely to make the most out of loan than a person who lacks in-depth understanding. Because Canadian Funding Corporation’s client’s needs range from short-term bridge financing to first, second or even third home mortgages, Moishe Alexander believes in providing the same financial knowledge as the foundation for every business relationship. The worlds of social philanthropy and corporate business of intersect only by necessity. Mr. Alexander understands that the two are not mutually exclusive by any means. He attributes CFC’s success to smart decisions on a business and human level. Canadian Funding Corporation works with its clients to assure that they possess the knowledge and tools to continue making educated business decisions after origination and closing of a loan. Moishe Alexander and his associates have achieved funding for many high-ratio loans that no other lenders would fund. He has made it possible for young couples with little credit to purchase a first home, for families to secure a second mortgage to pay for their children’s education, and for elderly couples to remain in their homes after retirement when income levels drop off. Helping individuals within his community is gratifying for Moishe Alexander, as is his work with real estate development firms working on green, affordable, community-centric projects. Mr. Alexander built his business with a desire to connect the right lenders and borrowers in a highly personalized fashion, forming positive and enduring business relationships. He has always seen every client for the individual that they are – no two clients have the same needs. Listening to and understanding a client’s goals and dreams makes it possible for Moishe Alexander to focus on the bigger picture of community. Business is business. Contributing to society in a truly meaningful way is something else entirely, a lesson that Mr. Alexander has carried with his since childhood. Canadian Funding Corporation and Moishe Alexander are dedicated to providing financial education and support to members of their community, in Canada and around the globe.
